The Tokyo Foundation hosted an IMF World Economic Outlook (WEO) seminar.

On May 9, following the release of the April 2025 edition of the World Economic Outlook (WEO), Dr. Andresa Lagerborg, an economist from the WEO team in the IMF's Research Department, visited Japan to hold a seminar for individuals associated with our foundation. This seminar was realized thanks to an introduction by the IMF Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (OAP).

Dr. Lagerborg delivered a presentation on Chapter 2 of the WEO, "The Rise of the Silver Economy: Global Implications of Population Aging," which was followed by a lively Q&A session. Questions from participants included: the presentation suggests that reskilling older workers is an effective policy for improving their human capital and labor outcomes. However, what specific areas or types of reskilling are actually needed? And, considering that fiscal pressures from aging populations could lead to more inward-looking politics, what would be the impact on worsening global inequality if aging also spreads to developing countries?

The Tokyo Foundation will continue to proactively take advantage of such opportunities to pursue even better policy research by incorporating the latest trends both in Japan and abroad.
