The Heisei Era in Review: A Political and Diplomatic Assessment
In April 2019, the curtain will fall on the Heisei era after three turbulent decades. Beginning in 1989, the year the Berlin Wall was demolished, Heisei was an era of profound global and domestic transformation ushered in by the end of the Cold War and the rise of globalization. At a recent Foundation forum, three noted experts in domestic politics and foreign affairs exchanged insights into the dynamics of this period and identified key challenges facing Japan in the years ahead.
