Profile:

After graduating from Doshisha University in 1969, became a secretary for a House of Representatives member; was next a member of the Aichi Prefectural Assembly for three terms, serving for a total of 12 years. In April 1995, elected mayor of Inuyama City. Actively engaged in community development by making use of cultural endowment, local educational reform, and the promotion of a “local manifesto.” Served as co-representative of a federation of local government leaders who have made use of manifestos and representative of another conference of leaders focusing on crafting and implementing proposals. Resigned during his third term as mayor in October 2006 to run for governor of Aichi Prefecture.
