The Tokyo Foundation Forum welcomes Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Director Anson Hines to examine global fishery trends and the need for measures to ensure the sustainability of maritime resources in the light of growing consumer demand. The fishing industry’s role in promoting the economic development of outlying, coastal areas will also be explored.

The panel will also include fishing expert Masayuki Komatsu, a former Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries official who was deputy director in charge of whaling and a delegation member for the southern bluefin tuna dispute at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. The moderator will be Tatsuo Hatta, chairman of the government’s Working Group to Design National Strategic Economic Zones.
