Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University

Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University was founded in 1992 based upon the Faculty of Education at the Anafartalar Campus. Before this, the facilities had housed a Teacher Training Institute, then a branch of Trakya University. With its new status and intake from Turkey's large youth population, the university developed quickly in terms of the number of students, staff, and facilities, spurring the opening of new faculties and colleges. The university has expanded rapidly over the last few years and currently has over 22,000 students participating in a wide variety of programmes taught by close to a thousand academic staff in two graduate schools, nine faculties, two polytechnic colleges (four-year programmes) and 11 vocational colleges (two-year programmes). There are several campuses in Çanakkale itself and some of the academic units are located in other towns of the province.

Japanese Language Program

The Department of Japanese Language Teaching was founded in 1993. It aims primarily to train qualified Japanese language teachers for secondary schools and provides not only practical language skills but also tuition in a range of subjects such as history, literature, linguistics, and language teaching. The department also tries to foster competent individuals for the education, tourism, and business sectors, and ultimately, to contribute to developing a bilateral relationship between Turkey and Japan.

Also, the department currently exerts efforts in pursuit of the following:

To encourage the Turkish government to install Japanese language programmes in secondary schools. It has been more than 10 years since the foundation of the department; however, there are only two high schools that provide a Japanese programme. Therefore, the alumni find few teaching positions despite their five years of hard work in the undergraduate programme. The department is working strenuously to convince the Turkish Ministry of National Education to be aware of the importance of studying Japanese language and culture for the future generations in Turkey, and to be recognized for the excellence of its research and educational studies in Japanese language and culture in Turkey and Europe.

Nippon Foundation Funds for Japanese Language Education Program (NF-JLEP)

NF-JLEP at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University offers the following programs;

Scholarship for Ph.D students (only for faculty members in their 4th grade)
Scholarship for undergraduate students
Fund for Research Trip to Japan (for 2nd grade students)
Fund for library
