PROFILE:

Received his PhD in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Has been a researcher at the Research Institute for Peace and Security, a research associate at the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Tokyo, where he was later named associate professor, and director of the University of Tokyo’s Institute of Oriental Culture. Served as a member of the East Asia Vision Group from 1999 to 2001 and as a special member of several government advisory councils.
